Where the disk is the bottleneck and where something else matters more. 26 October 2026 [ #hosting](https://hosteam.pl/en/blog?tag=hosting) [ #vps](https://hosteam.pl/en/blog?tag=vps) “NVMe hosting” has become a slogan in almost every offer. It is worth knowing what is behind it and when paying more for a faster disk makes sense – and when the site will be waiting on something else anyway. ## How NVMe differs from SSD Both are solid-state drives with no moving parts. The difference is how they connect to the server: - **SATA SSD** uses an interface designed for spinning disks. It tops out around 550 MB/s, with a command queue that handles one job at a time. - **NVMe** connects directly to the PCIe bus. Throughput is counted in gigabytes per second and the drive handles thousands of queues in parallel. For a website the second property matters more than throughput: **the number of small operations per second (IOPS)** and the time of a single read. A shop’s database does not read big files – it performs thousands of small reads from different places on the disk. That is where NVMe has the biggest advantage. ## When NVMe makes a difference - **Online shops** with many products, filters and variants – every search and filter is a database query. - **WordPress with many plugins** – some plugins query the database on every page view. - **Admin panels and reports** that crunch large tables. - **Many sites on one account**, when several of them read from disk at once. - **Backups and data imports** – operations on many files finish sooner. ## When the disk is not the problem - **A brochure site or a cached blog** – finished pages are served from memory and the disk barely works. - **Slow code or heavy plugins** – if PHP computes something for two seconds, a faster disk will not shorten it. - **Large images and scripts** – load time in the browser depends on page weight, not the server’s disk. - **Too little memory** – without enough RAM the server slows down regardless of the disk. A good test: if the server’s time to first byte (TTFB) is low but the page still loads slowly, the problem is in the page itself – images, scripts, the number of browser requests. If TTFB grows with traffic or when filtering products, the disk and the database are good suspects. ## What else to check besides the disk type 1. **Account limits** – how much CPU, memory and how many PHP processes your site gets. A fast disk will not help an account with too few cores. 2. **PHP version** – newer PHP versions are noticeably faster than older ones with the same code. 3. **Server location** – for Polish users, a server in Poland means a shorter trip for every request. 4. **Caching** – a well-configured page cache often gives more than a disk upgrade. ## NVMe at Hosteam Our [hosting](https://hosteam.pl/en/hosting) plans come in two variants: standard and NVMe for sites that lean harder on their database.
